VET1. 10. 3 Veterinary Practice Software The use of medical data management software is an essential skill for veterinary professionals. Students become familiar with Avimark, the industry standard in veterinary practice management software.
Key skills acquired include scheduling and booking appointments, client file setup, updating medical records, integration of lab results, inventory control, estimate and invoice generation and completion of transactions. Topics covered include animal evolution, domestication and the physiological and developmental basis of behaviour. Normal and aberrant manifestations of domestic animal behaviour, followed by treatment and preventative measures are outlined. Current animal welfare issues relating to the animal industry are examined and discussed.
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) legislation is detailed, promoting hazard recognition and prevention of work- related injuries and illnesses. An overview of relevant legislation and regulatory organizations is acquired. Other topics covered include chemical hazards, fire prevention, ergonomics, emergency protocols and mental health. Using a variety of workplace scenarios, students develop and practise the written and oral skills they need to communicate confidently and effectively with the public and other members of the veterinary team.
